Twitter’s “Views” are Fake…



Videos on Twitter (X) are exploding. But the “views” aren’t as real as they would like you to believe.

  1. YouTube counts views better, but even that isn't exactly representative. You need to look at retention to have any idea how many people actually watched a video.

    A video which is an hour long, with 10,000,000 views, and an average retention of 60 seconds, wasn't actually watched by many people. And you can't even really look at average there to understand how many people watched the whole video. Average retention of 30 minutes on that same video could mean 5 million people watched the whole thing, and 5 million people watched only enough to count as a view, or it could mean (in theory) that 10 million people watched half of it, and 0 people saw the last 30 minutes! And, of course, all manner of other configurations.

I usually wouldn't click on a video on my homepage if it only has a few hundred views like this one, but seeing as it's a topic I've been interested in since I started noticing the crazy views on twitter I thought I'd give this video a go. And it's great! So concise and well laid out, and the editing was top tier too! Hope to see more stuff from you in the future man, keep up the good work!

  3. How did you figure out that the number is 15 million for the tucker interview?
    On two seconds vs 30 seconds, yt is a video platform Twitter isn't (although Elon has ideas, it's just ideas and really nothing more…) also interesting that tiktok count's a view by 0.1 second, like what. Do people really scroll that fast??
